PrintPort Studio is the creative practice of surface designer Franklyn Telfer. At the heart of my work is something I have always loved: the idea of creating a world that once existed only as a thought.

BEHIND THE STUDIO

Franklyn Telfer

Founder & Surface Designer

I've always been fascinated by the way a film can pull you into another time, how fashion can create a character, how an interior can completely change the feeling of a space, or how a piece of art can make you imagine a story that was never actually told.

Those things naturally find their way into the way I design.

A print might begin with a scene I've imagined, a place, a colour combination, a piece of culture, an old photograph, a film, a silhouette or simply a feeling I want to explore.

I rarely know exactly where it will end when I begin. I collect fragments, experiment digitally, play with colour and scale and follow whatever starts to feel interesting.

My imagination has never really stayed within one creative discipline. I love textiles and fashion, but I’m equally fascinated by film, interiors, art, photography and the possibilities of digital and simulated worlds.

It’s why I rarely see a print as just a pattern. I might imagine the person wearing it, the room it could live in, the fabric it should become or the story surrounding it.

Then comes one of my favourite parts: seeing something that once existed only in my head and on a screen become physical.

How will it move?
How will it fall?
What happens when the scale changes?
What happens when it becomes cloth?

That transition from imagination to something tangible is a huge part of why I create.

I want a print to feel like it came from somewhere, even if that somewhere never actually existed.

Designed beyond the screen.

Designed beyond the screen.

I think about the life of a design beyond the artwork itself. Its scale, material, movement, surroundings and the different ways it might eventually exist.

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Film, fashion, interiors, culture, art, photography, memory and imagined places can all find their way into the same idea.
